Chapter 12 of 14, third quire

Living in the province of Toledo and working in Madrid

Book for the province of Toledo: residence procedures follow the place where you live, not the address of your employer. So if your home is in the north of the province, in a town such as Illescas or Seseña, and you work in Madrid, the green certificate, the TIE, the fingerprints and the renewals are all booked for Toledo.

The procedure, in Spanish and in English

En castellano

Provincia de residencia

In plain English

The province where you live: it decides where your residence procedures are booked.

Where
Ronda de Buenavista 57, Toledo (police procedures, same building as the Oficina de Extranjería); Comisaría de Talavera de la Reina, C/ Carlos Barral 2; the confirmation of your booking says which
Carry
  • Padrón certificate from your own town
  • Your NIE document, green certificate or TIE
  • Your contract, even if the company is in Madrid

The rule: your home decides, not your office

Spanish residence files are handled in the province of your domicilio, your home address. Your padrón shows that address. If the padrón says Seseña, the file belongs to the province of Toledo, whatever your contract says.

Booking for the right province

On the screens of the cita previa, the province is the first thing you choose, and it decides every office you are shown afterwards. Choose Toledo. In this province, policia.es lists two police offices for foreigners: Ronda de Buenavista 57 in Toledo, and the Comisaría de Talavera de la Reina. It lists none in Illescas or Seseña.

For a NIE on its own, with no residence, we suggest the same province, so that one address runs through your whole file.

Your padrón is in your own town

Illescas, Seseña, Yuncos and every other municipality keep their own padrón, the register of residents. You register with the ayuntamiento of the place where you sleep, not where you work. Do it first: the padrón certificate is the clearest proof of where you live.

What stays the same

  • Your NIE: one number in every province
  • Your Social Security number: valid across Spain
  • Your green certificate or TIE: valid in every region
  • Your employer’s duty to register you, wherever the company is

Two regions in one week

Your home is in Castilla-La Mancha; your job may be in the Comunidad de Madrid. Services run by the regions, such as your health centre, follow your home address. So does the regional part of your income tax. After a move from Madrid, give your new address to the bank, to your employer and to the Agencia Tributaria.

In Toledo, in particular

For anyone whose home is in the province, the police procedures are at Ronda de Buenavista 57 in Toledo, always by cita previa, and the Comisaría de Talavera de la Reina also lists the NIE, EU registration and the TIE. policia.es lists no foreigners’ unit in Illescas or Seseña, so people from the north of the province book for Toledo and travel to Toledo or Talavera de la Reina for the appointment.

Questions on this chapter

My office is in Madrid. Can I book my fingerprints there?

Plan on the province of Toledo, where you live. Residence procedures follow your home.

I moved from Madrid to Seseña. Does my NIE change?

No. One person keeps one NIE in every province. Register on the padrón of Seseña and give the police your new address.

My padrón is still in Madrid. Is that a problem?

It sends your file to the wrong province. Register at your new town hall first.
