Chapter 11 of 14, third quire
Working in Toledo: the numbers your employer asks for
Your employer asks for two numbers, your NIE and your número de afiliación (Social Security number), to make the alta: your registration with the Seguridad Social, due before your first day at work. A European may work from the start. A person from outside the EU needs permission to work before any of this.
The procedure, in Spanish and in English
En castellano
Número de afiliación a la Seguridad Social
In plain English
Your Social Security number, given once by the TGSS, which your employer needs to register you.
- Where
- TGSS, Plaza San Agustín 3, 45001 Toledo (901 502 050), or online
- Carry
- NIE document
- Passport or identity card
- Visa or work authorisation, if you are not an EU citizen
- Contract or job offer
EU, EEA and Swiss workers
You may work freely. Ask for a NIE, on its own or with the green certificate, and register as a resident once you have lived here for three months. Your contract is the proof for the certificate. Living in the province with a job in Madrid changes none of this: your papers stay with Toledo.
Non-EU workers: the authorisation first
For a non-EU citizen, permission to work is written either in a visa stamped by a Spanish consulate or in an autorización de trabajo (work authorisation). For this province, the Oficina de Extranjería en Toledo at Ronda de Buenavista 57 rules on authorisations. The employer often starts the application. A NIE alone, even one asked for on form EX-15, never allows you to work.
Número de afiliación: the Social Security number
The TGSS gives this number. Its full name is Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social, in English the general treasury of social security. It is given once and never changes. The employer may request it for you; you can also request it online, or in person at one of the TGSS offices. Bring your NIE document and your passport or identity card.
Alta: the registration before day one
Alta means registration. The employer must give you the alta in the Seguridad Social before you start. You can check it later in your informe de vida laboral, the report of your working life, which you can request from the Seguridad Social.
Self-employed: the autónomo
An autónomo is a self-employed worker. To register as one, you need your NIE first, and, if you are not an EU citizen, an authorisation that allows self-employment.
Public offices in the province
Two public offices in the city are useful in a first job. The TGSS has its provincial office at Plaza San Agustín 3, 45001 Toledo, phone 901 502 050 or 915 410 291; it deals with affiliation, the Social Security number. The Oficina de Empleo de Toledo, the regional employment office of the Junta de Comunidades, is at Bajada de Castilla-La Mancha 5 (rear entrance), 45003 Toledo, phone 925 330 830: registration as a jobseeker, job offers, EURES for work elsewhere in Europe, training and support for self-employment. No hours are given for it.
The Junta lists other employment offices in the province, among them Illescas (Carretera de Ugena, phone 925 330 800) and two in Talavera de la Reina: Calle Amor Divino 3 (925 839 410) and Avenida Pío XII 2 A (925 839 445).
In Toledo, in particular
For the whole province, the Oficina de Extranjería en Toledo at Ronda de Buenavista 57 rules on work authorisations: the Delegación del Gobierno gives its hours as Monday to Friday, 9:00 until 14:00, gives no phone, and accepts applications online through MERCURIO or in person with a cita previa. The police procedures for workers, the NIE and the TIE, are in the same building, and the Comisaría de Talavera de la Reina lists them too.
Questions on this chapter
Does my employer ask for my Social Security number?
Often, yes. If the employer does not, ask for it yourself at the TGSS, online or in person.
I have a stay for studies. May I take a job?
It depends on your authorisation and the current rules. Check before you sign.
I live in Seseña and my job is in Madrid. Where do I book?
For the province of Toledo, where you live. The employer’s address does not change that.
