Chapter 6 of 14, second quire

British in Toledo: what Brexit changed on your papers

If your life was already in Spain on 31 December 2020, your card is the TIE of the Withdrawal Agreement; if you came later, you need a visa or an authorisation first, like any non-EU citizen. A British passport has counted as non-EU in Spain ever since Brexit. Spanish pages speak of the Acuerdo de Retirada: it shields British citizens, and their family members, who lived here by the last day of the transition period.

The procedure, in Spanish and in English

En castellano

Exp. tarjeta asociada al Acuerdo de Retirada de ciudadanos británicos y sus familiares (Brexit)

In plain English

The residence card for British citizens, and their families, protected by the Withdrawal Agreement.

Two groups, two routes

  • Resident in Spain by the end of 2020: you keep your rights under the Agreement, and your document is a TIE that names it
  • Arriving since then: you need a visa or an authorisation first, like any other non-EU citizen, and then a TIE
  • Owner or visitor who lives in the UK: no card, only a NIE if you buy, sell or inherit

The Withdrawal Agreement card

For Agreement residents, the Delegación del Gobierno lists a procedure of its own among the police procedures of its Toledo office, Ronda de Buenavista 57: “POLICIA-EXP. TARJETA ASOCIADA AL ACUERDO DE RETIRADA DE CIUDADANOS BRITANICOS Y SUS FAMILIARES (BREXIT)”. In English: issue of the card linked to the Withdrawal Agreement, for British citizens and their family members. It is booked like any other police procedure, with a cita previa.

Bring proof of your life here before 2021: the old green paper, if you kept it, a padrón certificate, a rental contract, a Spanish tax return, a job contract. The more clearly the papers show your residence by that date, the simpler the appointment.

Still holding the old green certificate

Many British residents registered as Europeans before Brexit, on the green certificate, and still keep that paper. It records your registration, but it has no photograph and says nothing about the Agreement. The TIE does both, so a border officer or a bank clerk can read your status from the card alone. The exchange is the procedure above.

Moving to Toledo now

A British citizen who moves here now applies like any non-EU citizen: a visa from a Spanish consulate in the UK, for work, study, family or residence without work (residencia no lucrativa), and then the toma de huellas for a TIE after arrival. Buying a home here opens no door to residence: the golden visa ended in 2025.

For a move planned by one firm, from the visa to the first weeks, AnchorLess organises relocations to Spain.

In Toledo, in particular

British residents of Toledo, Illescas, Seseña or Talavera de la Reina book the Withdrawal Agreement card for the province of Toledo. The Delegación del Gobierno lists it among the police procedures of its office at Ronda de Buenavista 57, always by cita previa. Bring proof of your residence before 2021, even if you also bring the old green paper.

Questions on this chapter

I lived in Toledo before 2021 but never registered. Am I covered?

Possibly, if you can show that you lived here before the end of 2020. The proof decides the case. Write to us with the papers you have.

Does my old green paper still count?

It still records your registration. The Withdrawal Agreement TIE is easier to use, because it has your photo and names your status.

I arrived this year. Can I get the Agreement card?

No. The Agreement covers people who lived here by the end of 2020. Your route is a visa or an authorisation, then a TIE.

I own a house in the province but live in England. What do I need?

A NIE, on form EX-15, for the deed, taxes and bills. You need no residence card while your home is in the UK.
