Request assistance

Chapter 7 of 14, second quire

Students and language assistants in Toledo: which papers, in which order

Your passport decides the route. A European student or language assistant files form EX-18 and receives the green certificate. A non-EU one comes with a visa, then books the toma de huellas for the TIE card. Many newcomers come to Toledo for a course or a teaching post, such as a place as a language assistant (auxiliar de conversación) in a school. This chapter gives the general rules; your school or university gives the details of your own case.

The procedure, in Spanish and in English

En castellano

Estancia por estudios

In plain English

Permission to stay in Spain for a course or training; it is not a general permit to work.

Holders of a European passport

After three months here, register for the green certificate on form EX-18. Choose the category that matches the papers your post or course gives you: a work contract, a grant letter, a letter of enrolment. As a student you show the enrolment, your health insurance and a declaración responsable about your means.

From outside the EU: the visa first

A non-EU student or assistant applies for a visa at a Spanish consulate before travelling. Read the sticker in your passport: it states the type of stay. A stay for studies is called estancia por estudios. That phrase decides your next steps, so keep it in mind when you read any official page.

After you arrive: the TIE

When the visa covers a long stay, your next step is the toma de huellas, the prints for the TIE. Book it once you have an address here. The folder: the EX-17; the passport and its visa; one recent photo; the paid Modelo 790 código 012; the letter from your school or university. A padrón certificate helps.

Staying on: the prórroga

Prórroga means extension. If your course or your post continues, ask for the extension before the end date on your card, not after it. Keep the new letter from your school or university ready: nearly every step asks for it.

Paid work beside your course

Can a student also take paid work, and for how many hours a week? Your own authorisation and the current rules decide. Read both before you sign. Any job means an alta (registration) with the Seguridad Social, made by the employer.

In Toledo, in particular

On policia.es, the list for Ronda de Buenavista 57 includes “Estudiantes” and “Prórrogas de estancia”; the Oficina de Extranjería works in the same building. Students and assistants placed in Talavera de la Reina, Illescas or a village of the province also book for the province of Toledo.
